I was listening to a sermon on my iPod the other day and the question was asked, “why do people always wait until a major crisis before they act?” I got to thinking about it and it really hit home with me on a couple of levels. First, I may be out of a job if people did not do this? Huh? Well, when my clients don’t take care of their business, they let the cash flow slack, they get behind in their bills and then payroll taxes and other taxes with the IRS. Not long after that, the IRS is knocking wanting to get them to pay the taxes or close their doors. It’s usually not that simply put and is usually much scarier than that – especially to the client. Or, take some of my family court clients who have gone through time married to someone and not taken action to try to correct some behavior that is disrespectful or worse. The common denominator is that both people just jam their heads in the sand hoping the problem will go away.
Everyone is like this on some level. It may not be that you let your business get killed, or your relationships, but some things always get purposefully ignored. I know there are a lot of things that I don’t want to do because I just dread doing the work. Whether it is cutting the grass, changing the oil in your car or doing laundry. If you ignore the problem, there are always consequences whether it is snakes and rats living in your overgrown yard, your engine burning up, or you smelling terrible because you haven’t washed your clothes in months.
Why wait until the problem gets that bad? More often than not, there is a good reason for avoiding the dreaded activity. But, more often than not, it isn’t nearly as bad as we have made it out in our mind. It is certainly not as bad as the dire consequences that we face if we let the problem continue to grow and fester without doing anything.
What’s bugging you? What do you have hanging over you that you have been putting off? I would recommend that you take care of it soon. Just do it. Get it over with. You will have that weight lifted off of you and you will feel better. Not only that, but you will have taken care of a problem in your life while it is just a baby without letting it develop into a full-grown headache!
