Totally at a Disadvantage?

Have you ever felt like you have gone to a gun fight and all you brought was a knife? Totally helpless. Check out the video clip below from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones takes on a dude with a sword.

Sometimes in life, you are thrust into situations where you end up like the sword fighter. You go into the game thinking you have such a great advantage and you end up getting killed. My story has haunted me for a long time. Back in elementary school I was a member of the Cub Scouts. I guess you wouldn’t say I was a die-hard go after every badge in the book member, but I did want to at least keep up with my friends. If you have ever been in Scouts you know they have the Pinewood Derby race where you are given a kit and you build a little wooden race car that rolls down a track. I was so proud of my little car. I painted it white with a cloud and lightning bolt. I put my number on the side and the top. It was pretty sharp, even if I do say so myself. I meticulously put the wheels on so it would be properly balanced and aligned – I mean, you don’t want your car getting stuck on the track, do you?At this point, I had not seen any of the other people’s cars, but the day of the big race was upon us! I just knew I was going to win, or at least make a good showing. Then I showed up at the big race and noticed that all of the other folks must of had engineers for parents. I mean, their cars were awesome. They had weights strategically placed all throughout the car, they were streamlined. Those cars flew down the track. And the car I spent so much time “perfecting” barely made it down the ramp because it didn’t weigh enough. I was so disappointed and embarrassed. I definitely felt like I brought a knife to a gun fight.

I’m so glad that even when we are put into spiritual fights, we aren’t the guy breaking in with a little knife. Our battle has been won for us already by Jesus Christ. We may be threatened and tempted by the devil, but our weapon of choice, the Word of God, is kind of like taking a bazooka to a knife fight. The devil doesn’t stand a chance. It’s my goal to make sure my bazooka is cleaned, primed, loaded, and ready for my next fight.
