Ordinary Average Guy

A few weeks ago I wrote a post titled, Perseverence is Genius in Disguise, about Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group.  In an interview with Donny Deutsch, Mr. Sternlicht talked about how he was always a good student but not a great student, or a good athlete but not a great athlete.  Now Mr. Sternlicht is experiencing enormous success.  I don’t think I would ever call him an ordinary average guy.

Now, me, on the other hand; I am the epitome of the ordinary average guy.  Average grades, average height, average talents, and on and on.  I have always felt like there are more talented people around me – seemingly better at everything.  Sometimes, this gets me down.  I try not to let it, but sometimes, I just feel whiny.

In a recent Bible study, it kind of hit me – God uses the average people to do extraordinary things in his kingdom.  Think about all of the people used throughout the Bible – David who was the smallest of his family did the unthinkable and took on and defeated the giant Philistine then later when he became king he danced in his underwear in the street (2 Samuel 6: 14), or Noah building an ark when there was no rain (Genesis 6-9), and what about Jesus’ disciples?  None of them were educated or scholars.  They were all just ordinary average guys (Acts 6: 13) and after Jesus was crucified and raised from the dead they continued to perform miracles, saved thousands of people at a time, and preached the gospel.

So thank God, I am an ordinary, average guy.  I hope I can be used to do some great things for God – not for my glory, but to raise up Jesus and solely for His glory and honor!
