I know that trying to do some progressive things in an “inter-generational” Southern Baptist church is difficult. Like the old Baptist jokes go, we have to send all decisions to a committee to be researched, then recommended to the deacons or the pastor, then to the church for a vote, then back to committee, on over and over and over. Depending on what you are trying to change (gasp!!) you may hear, “that’s not how we have done it before.” I feel like they are being so stubborn. But are they?

Currently, we are working toward a video projection system for our sanctuary. I know, I know. Welcome to the 20th century. Most likely, this will be out of date by the time we have it installed. Well, we’re not really on the bleeding edge of technology and we are way behind many other churches in our area technologically speaking, but we are getting there. Which is a whole other issue – do we have to keep up with the Jones’?

One constant challenge for any agent of change is to get people on board and to get people to fully buy-in. There was a great post on Seth Godin’s blog yesterday about this very topic and one I plan on giving a lot of thought to as we continue to sell the idea of using technology in church to a generation who thinks VCR’s are still the state of the art. Check out Seth’s post, Probably Not Stupid.

While I get frustrated, Seth’s post made me see that if I used the same frame of reference, I would probably make the same decision. So now the work begins to try and either change that frame of reference (i.e. change the minds of “stubborn” people) or change my message so it makes more sense within their frame of reference? Is this true leadership?

Man, I just read this article: Can You Really Afford To Bash The ‘Millenial Lawyer’? by Susan Cartier Liebel. This is where I’m at! Although I do not work for a large firm, I feel a huge entrepreneurial drive to do more and live the lifestyle that I want. I don’t want to work 80 hours per week. I don’t want to spend all of my time at the office or in the court room. Actually, I want to spend as little time as possible in the court room.

In my last post “No More Mondays“, I talked a little about chasing your dreams and designing your lifestyle before deciding what you are going to do to create it.

I agree with Susan (not because I am a “millenial” in the workplace, but because I have some strong feelings about controlling my own destiny. That was the reason I went to law school. I wanted to be able to provide a service that people need and that allows me to get out on my own and take care of my family without some CEO or some board of directors deciding it’s time for their pockets to get a little fatter and the employees can take a ride.

I haven’t heard this so much from other lawyers at big firms around here – there is always the subtle arrogance that seeps through, but I think there is also some jealously as well from both directions. I would love to have the guaranteed income, the bonuses, the fancy office, and the health and retirement benefits paid by the firm. I’m sure they would like to have the time freedom, the ability to take any case you want, the opportunity to work from a home office if they want and the ability to be their own boss and not worry about explaining something to the shareholders. I think lawyers and law firms aren’t necessarily competing. They should work together for the greater calling.

In our Bible study group, we went through a study by Reggie McNeil called “The Present Future.” One of the points that really stuck out to me was how most churches have the attitude of “come and get it. We have a corner on the spiritual market, and if you want to know about God, you have to come here.” This attitude makes the church into more of a Pharisee from Jesus’ day than the outreach tool that God had planned. Mr. McNeil said the church was acting like a big desalination plant, just sucking all of the salt out of the Earth rather than putting salt into the Earth.

Really, the church should be looking for ways to impact the people around it. Today, I read an awesome post on Tony Morgan‘s site about the information people (including businesses and churches) put on their electronic signs. That they put a lot of useless information on the sign like the time and temperature rather than something really impact-full and probably blame the people driving by at 50 mph for not slowing down to read all of their messages.
